Four Waterfalls Walk
About
Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn is one of the four stunning waterfalls located along the famous Four Waterfalls Walk in the Brecon Beacons National Park (Bannau Brycheiniog), specifically within the Ystradfellte area of Waterfall Country in South Wales. This waterfall is part of the River Mellte, and its name in Welsh roughly translates to “Lower Fall of the White Meadow.”
Key Features of Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn:
- Cascading Falls: Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn is a multi-tiered waterfall, with water rushing down a series of steps and ledges, creating an intricate and dramatic cascade. Unlike some of the other waterfalls in the area that have a single plunge, this waterfall is more spread out, with a natural series of smaller drops and pools.
- Location: Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn is located downstream from Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, its larger counterpart, and upstream from Sgwd y Pannwr and Sgwd yr Eira. It lies along the Four Waterfalls Walk, which is a popular circular hiking route that visits all four falls. The trail takes you through ancient woodland, offering beautiful views of the surrounding forest and river gorge.
- Natural Surroundings: The waterfall is surrounded by moss-covered rocks and rich vegetation, making it feel secluded and tranquil. The lush greenery of the woodland contrasts beautifully with the white water of the falls, especially after periods of rain when the river is full and the cascades are most powerful.
- Viewing and Accessibility: Reaching Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn requires following part of the well-marked Four Waterfalls Walk. The paths are moderately challenging, with some steep and uneven sections, especially as you approach the waterfall viewpoints. However, it is accessible to most hikers with a reasonable level of fitness. Caution is needed around the waterfall itself, as the terrain can be slippery.
- Photography Spot: This waterfall is particularly photogenic due to its multi-tiered nature and the scenic forested gorge that surrounds it. Photographers love capturing the different perspectives of the falls from the nearby rocky outcrops and natural platforms.
- Swimming and Exploring: While the pools below Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn may look inviting, it’s important to be cautious due to the strong currents, especially after rain. The river can be dangerous in places, so wild swimming or exploring close to the waterfall should be done with care, if at all.
Key Tips for Visiting:
- Hiking Gear:
The trail can get muddy and slippery, especially in wet weather, so sturdy hiking boots with good grip are recommended. - Best Time to Visit:
Visiting after rainfall enhances the flow of the falls, making them more dramatic, though the trail will be wetter. Autumn provides beautiful color contrasts with the changing leaves, while spring brings fresh greenery. - Part of a Larger Trail:
The Four Waterfalls Walk takes you to all four main waterfalls in the area, so Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn is often visited as part of this route. Depending on where you park (e.g., Gwaun Hepste or Cwm Porth), the total walk to see all four waterfalls can take 3-4 hours.
