- Paul Williams 8/26/2024The best of the four big waterfalls because you can walk behind the curtain of water which is exhilarating. You'll get a bit damp because of the spray, but well worth it. Gets busy on a nice summer day so maybe pick a grim Monday in the winter instead. Steps down are steep so not ideal for wheelchairs or tiny people.read moreread less
- Kayleigh Price 8/19/2024This place is amazing for nature lovers, and it is dog friendly. The waterfall is beautiful. It was such a serene feeling to stand behind the waterfall. I would highly recommend. This is the best one out of 4 waterfalls. The steps going down are steep, and it is a bit muddy and slippy, so I would recommend wearing a good pair of shoes or hiking boots.read moreread less
- Seren Protheroe 7/26/2024The best adventure of my 5 day trip. Dog friendly which Snowie loved. Can swim in the waterfall! Which was amazing and did at 2. Signposted well and paths well layed out but didn’t take away from the surrounding nature. You can even walk behind the waterfall! Choose the length of your track, and different car parking spaces. Was £5 for parking but I think that’s worth the stunning location, views and day out. I would recommend going during the week to avoid business of weekends as it would definitely be busy.read moreread less

The Four Waterfalls Walk
The Four Waterfalls Walk is a scenic and moderately challenging trail that leads you to four spectacular waterfalls, including Sgwd yr Eira. Here’s what you can expect on this unforgettable journey:
- Trail Overview: The circular trail is approximately 5.5 miles (9 km) long, with well-marked paths that take you through dense woodlands, across streams, and along rocky outcrops. The walk is accessible for most fitness levels, but be prepared for some steep sections and uneven terrain.
- The Other Waterfalls: In addition to Sgwd yr Eira, the trail includes Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, and Sgwd y Pannwr. Each waterfall has its own unique character, from the multi-tiered cascades of Sgwd Clun-Gwyn to the peaceful beauty of Sgwd y Pannwr.
- Perfect for Nature Lovers: The walk is rich in natural beauty, with opportunities to spot local wildlife, including birds, insects, and sometimes even otters in the streams. The area is also known for its diverse plant life, making it a haven for botanists and nature enthusiasts.
Experiencing Sgwd yr Eira
The highlight of the Four Waterfalls Walk, Sgwd yr Eira, offers an experience like no other:
- Walking Behind the Falls: The trail leads you directly behind the waterfall, allowing you to walk through a naturally carved path behind the curtain of water. Feel the cool mist on your face and listen to the powerful rush of water as you stand in awe of nature’s force.
- Safety First: While walking behind the falls is an incredible experience, the rocks can be slippery, so be sure to wear sturdy footwear with good grip. Take your time and enjoy the moment while staying safe. When the river is in flood it is impossible to follow the path behind the fall.
- Best Time to Visit: Sgwd yr Eira is beautiful year-round, but the waterfall is at its most impressive after periods of heavy rain, when the water flow is strongest. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best lighting for photography and a more peaceful experience.
Planning Your Visit to Sgwd yr Eira
How to Get There: Sgwd yr Eira is located near the village of Ystradfellte in the Brecon Beacons National Park. The trailhead for the Four Waterfalls Walk can be accessed from the Cwm Porth car park, which is the most popular starting point for this hike, or via the Eira trail at Dinas Rock. Please note that during times of flood you cannot walk behind the waterfall, nor would you be able to continue onto the four waterfalls trail from the Eira trail as the connecting path travels behind the fall.
What to Bring: Wear comfortable hiking boots, bring a waterproof jacket, and pack some snacks and water. A camera is a must for capturing the stunning views, and if you’re visiting during wet conditions, consider bringing a change of clothes.
